Qualifications
We offer training to both The British Horse Society (BHS)qualification scheme and the National
Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
The British Horse Society administers an examination system designed to meet the requirements of
the riding instructor, yard management, riding holiday sector, and those who wish to further their
knowledge in riding, stable management and horse care. It holds these examinations - aimed primarily
at career students - at BHS approved centres throughout the British Isles and overseas.
Stage 1
The minimum age for entry is 15 years. The candidate must understand the basic principles of horse
care and, working under supervision, must show some knowledge and practice of looking after a
well-mannered horse in the stable or at grass. He/she must be capable of riding a quiet, experienced
horse or pony in an enclosed space.
Stage 2
Before entering the Riding section of this examination the candidate must have passed the BHS Riding &
Road Safety. The candidate must understand the general management and requirement of horses for their
health and well being. Working under regular but not constant supervision, the candidates should be
able to carry out the care of a stable and grass kept horse during all seasons of the year. He/she
must have an understanding of how the horse adjusts his balance to carry a rider. The
candidate must be capable of riding quiet, experienced horse or pony in the countryside and
on the public highway, as well as in a manege.
Stage 3
The minimum age for entry is 17 years. The candidate must show an ability to look after and ride
up to 4 horses under a variety of circumstances. He/she should be tactful, yet effective, understanding
the reasons for his/her actions, both in horse care and while riding. A candidate taking just the
H K and Care Section (Groom's Certificate) at this stage is expected to be a competent enough
rider to be able to take horses on ride-and-lead exercises.
The BHS Preliminary Teaching Test
The minimum age for entry is 17 years. Candidates are examined in their ability to give
instruction in basic subjects. In order to enter the Preliminary Teaching Test
a candidate must have passed the H K and R Stage II examination.
BHS Preliminary Teacher (BHSPTC)
This is the first certificate on the instructor's ladder and is awarded to those passing the
Horse Knowledge and Riding Stage III and the Preliminary Teaching Test. This certificate
qualifies the holder at a "Trainee Teacher" level.
The candidate then needs to log 250 hours of teaching experience (25% of which may be Stable
Management Teaching). Once the 250 hours have been completed the Log Book (which is dispatched
with the BHSPT Certificate from the office) is returned to the BHS, together with a copy of a
current Health and Safety Executive First Aid at Work certificate, where random checks are made.
Mature candidates (over 25years) with extensive experience of teaching in the industry may apply
for exemption from the requirement of 250 hours (information sheet available from the Examinations
Office).
BHS Assistant Instructor's Certificate (BHSAI)
On gaining the required number of hours teaching experience, you will then be awarded this
nationally and internationally recognized qualification.
We anticipate our full time students to complete all stages and PTT in 18 months
with a pay structure ranging from £75 to £175 per week.
